Understanding Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
Cubital tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve, which runs along the inner part of the elbow, becomes compressed or irritated—often in the area commonly known as the “funny bone.” This nerve controls sensation in the ring and pinky fingers and helps power fine motor movement in the hand.
Dr. Iyengar provides targeted, personalized care to relieve ulnar nerve compression and restore comfort, helping prevent long-term nerve damage or loss of function. When compressed, the nerve can cause tingling, numbness, pain, or even hand weakness—especially when the elbow is bent for long periods, such as during phone use or sleep.
When should I consider treatment?
If you're experiencing frequent numbness or tingling in the ring and pinky fingers, hand clumsiness, or elbow discomfort that doesn't improve with rest or activity modification, it may be time to explore treatment options with Dr. Iyengar. Symptoms that persist or worsen could lead to muscle wasting in the hand, so early evaluation is key.
What are my treatment options?
Conservative Approaches
Mild cases of cubital tunnel syndrome can often be managed without surgery. Options include activity modification, wearing an elbow splint at night, using anti-inflammatory medications, and avoiding prolonged elbow flexion.
Surgical Options
For more severe or persistent symptoms, surgery may be recommended to relieve pressure on the ulnar nerve. Dr. Iyengar offers the following techniques:
- Ulnar Nerve Decompression: This involves releasing tight tissues compressing the nerve to restore normal function.
- Ulnar Nerve Transposition: In some cases, the nerve is moved to a new position (in front of the elbow) to prevent future irritation, especially in patients with anatomical risk factors or nerve instability.
- Medial Epicondylectomy: A small portion of the bone is removed to relieve pressure on the nerve if needed.
Dr. Iyengar will assess your specific symptoms and anatomy to determine the most effective treatment plan.
Why choose Dr. Iyengar for hand and nerve surgery?
As a fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeon, Dr. Iyengar specializes in delicate nerve procedures like cubital tunnel surgery. His advanced training allows him to perform both minimally invasive and more complex decompression techniques, with a focus on restoring comfort, mobility, and long-term function.
What does recovery look like?
Recovery depends on the severity of the nerve compression and the procedure performed. Many patients experience gradual improvement in numbness and strength over several weeks to months. Light activity is usually allowed soon after surgery, with full return to work and hobbies typically following within 4–6 weeks.
If the nerve was compressed for a long time, full recovery may take longer—but surgery can still prevent further damage and improve overall function.

There isn't a bad thing I can say about Dr. Iyengar or my experience. I found Dr. Iyengar after I had been to a friend's consultation up in Bellevue. I heard her quote and options, and knew I wanted to be closer to home for my procedure. I got in for my consultation the same week as I had inquired about my procedure. Dr. Iyengar won me over with the fact that we both grew up in Puyallup, we share a love for Olive Garden breadsticks, he is friendly, knowledgeable, has an incredible bedside manner, taking time to answer questions and get to know your needs, professional, and funny. From consultation to 3 weeks post op, and everything in between has been an experience that I would recommend to family and friends, and have recommend to anyone that asks. If you're going back and forth, do yourself a favor and stop looking. Dr. Iyengar is your guy!! My BFF and I are proof that this guy is THE. BEST.

I was having trouble getting a grip on some hand tools, and at a restaurant that used round table ware rather than flat and edged utensils I notice I couldn't seem to hold them from rolling. My primary physician referred me to Dr. Iyengar. Probably one of the better 20 mile appointments I've had.Dupuytren's contracture, is the culprit the good doctor diagnosed and showed how it prevents my hand from lying flat on a table top because the little, and ring finger were closing on the palm. I mentioned that the middle finger of that hand also locked often with some pain associated with the nuisance. "We can take care of these two procedures today if you'd like" he offered and it made sense if he was willing, I'd travelled 20 miles for the diagnosis, getting the cure at the same time was more than just good sense.
In less than an hour, a pain free hour, the troublesome contracting cord had been freed up and a needle shot of a drug, perhaps cortisone, though I've forgotten, and I was on my way to the physical therapist to learn what I could do following up on the minimal surgery.
From the time I entered the office until I left was a pleasant and friendly exchange of information and personal stories. I didn't wait long, so short I could not get through reading the diplomas and advanced training and education certificates hanging on the walls that Dr. Iyengar has garnered from his studies and surgical skills.
The good doctor keeps a friendly atmosphere for staff and patients, for me 20 miles no longer seemed inconvenient. I'll see him for the followup and look forward to that. You'll be in good hands with Dr. Iyengar and staff.
